We’re at the halfway point of the One Room Challenge!
What’s the One Room Challenge (ORC)? From now until the big reveal on November 18, I’m going to be working on fully transforming the living room (and since it opens into the kitchen, dining room, stairwell, and upstairs landing–those, too!). I’ll be posting weekly updates so you can see my progress.

So, what’s been going on this week?
Kitchen Complete
After much deliberations and a failed installation initial attempt at one of our initial backsplash tiles (it was so fragile, it crumbled in your fingers), we finally finished the kitchen!
That brown sepia mirrored tile backsplash! Does that fit our modern moody vintage theme or what?
We also opted for warm brass hardware to offset the black moody-ness and add to that vintage vibe.
Upstairs Wall
The big project this week is the upstairs accent wall. It was a big, blank wall that had me stumped for a long time: do we find a giant painting for it? Can we put a shelf for plants? How will we water those plants? Should we have a fake plant wall?
Finally, I decided on a horizontal slat wall. The wood would achieve that vintage part of our theme, and the black wall had the moody part covered. To make sure it was also modern, I decided to cut them so they created an abstract pattern.
What do you think?
I think one of the most unique parts of this wall is its placement in the house. Because it’s up high and part of the open upstairs landing, you can see it from downstairs in the living room, as you come up the stairs, and as you walk into the bedroom. So you really get to experience it from all angles!
I was really nervous about this concept but I’m so glad it worked out!

I’m also really loving this color combination of natural stained wood paired with the black walls. Will definitely be repeating that color combo throughout this room!
What’s Next?
Art, art, art! Next week we’re going to focus on decorating some of these gloriously moody walls. A black wall is a perfect canvas for…more canvas!
